Reply Emmanuel Frank. You should see your external drive listed in the Disk Management window. After a 20-second rescan, my externals and my Hot-Swap Deck always appear. However, it doesn't show up as a device. Check This Out

I can see the drive, and it says working properly, but there's no way for me to open it, it seems thus far. If your computer system was built prior to October 1998 and does not support UDMA 66 or greater you will be required to use the Master/Slave jumper settings. - -- but when I boot to it, it does not detect a hdd. I tried to look up how to reformat it, but realized it was going to delete my files. I had to assign a Letter to the drive.
If the Hard Drive is detected, the problem is with the SATA cable and has to be replaced.
Reply Prakash December 17, 2016 at 2:28 pm This document was very useful. If your external hard drive is more than 2TB it is probably formatted in GPT instead of standard MBR, which cannot be read by 32bit Operating Systems such as WIndows XP. Reply J.P.

However Windows (7) doesn't see any disk is present.

Manually pointing it to the usbstor.inf does not help either. Opening the disk is more risky than it sounds and will most likely cause more problems. my drive is still flashing and and not showing. I had a 1 TB external that's been giving me problems for months j was just about to write it off as ruined.
